Welcoming New Students.

InterVarsity's new (ish) website geared towards students recently displayed a story on what some InterVarsity Chapters at schools do to welcome new students.  They interviewed Amy for ideas from CofC.  Here's part of the article:

Watermelon
The new InterVarsity chapter at College of Charleston (SC) held a “Watermelon Party” during the first weekend back on campus. They received permission from the school to have the party in a small yard between the two largest freshmen dorms and hung up lots of posters around campus. Fifteen watermelons were donated by a local church. They set up a screen with a projector and played a clip of move-in scenes from shows or movies such as Gilmore Girls, Revenge of the Nerds, Friends, etc. Several upperclassmen were in charge of cutting up and serving watermelon while other returning students just mingled and met freshmen. More than 125 students showed up. Some just picked up watermelon and left, while others stayed the whole time and met a lot of other students in the InterVarsity community. “Many students who are now involved in our fellowship still talk about the Watermelon Party as key to becoming involved in the group,” says staff member Amy Weber.

C) Well, there's no C, so I'll just post something.

I got a new notebook/journal:

I love the size (it is slightly smaller than my Bible making it the perfect carrying companion). I love the graph paper pages (all those squared, evenly-marked lines actually encourage me to be more creative as I write). Finally, I love this version isn't as expensive as the regular moleskine notebooks.

(Ok, so I gotta work back into this blogging thing. Give me a few posts and I'll be back in the saddle.)

Student-led Large Groups.

For the last two years, Amy and I have primarily modeled what a good Large Group looks like. Organically and slowly we have called students into Large Group leadership. This Friday marks our very first entirely student-led Large Group.

It is being led by a team of 5 students, plus a 2-student worship team.

Please, pray for these 7 students as they lead us this Friday. They have been spending time planning the order of Large Group, what worship songs to do, how to integrate the direction of the speakers' talk into any other elements of the night, etc...

More than anything, pray that they would sense the Lord in the midst of details and deadlines.

Urbana Worship.

One of the ways Urbana worship was described to me before I had actually experienced compared it to the worship we will do in heaven. This is probably true. Not too many other places, this side of eternity, gather so many diverse Christians to worship through so many diverse methods: traditional hymns, contemporary worship; songs in Spanish, songs in Chinese; songs sung by a choir, songs played by a soloist; spoken word, dance and prayer.

This photo is of a few College of Charleston students. It is right to feel privileged as you peak into this very intimate moment. (It's ok, these students are cool with you seeing this picture.)
